Mr. Irrelevant

Mr. Irrelevant

This years Mr. Irrelevant, Justice Cunningham tight end for South Carolina, got us to thinking. If you had the opportunity to be the last pick in the NFL Draft would you be honored or disappointed? Personally speaking I haven't been able to answer this question with any degree of solid confidence. I think I would be happy to have my name called as part of the Draft by any Team, but then again the competitor in me would probably be very disappointed.
Justice Cunningham

We've met several sports fans that have been high school, college or wanna be pro athletes and it would be interesting to know what their answer would be. Mr. Irrelevant has become the butt of many jokes and the player selected last catches hell from his team mates but does he care, I don't think so! He is part of history and the only way to go for him is up. He has the opportunity to compete for a job with an NFL Team and show the world he should have been selected before becoming the last pick of the Draft.
Mr. Irrelevant Final Pick

Mr. Irrelevant Time to Shine!

He may be Mr. Irrelevant to the NFL but how do you think his family and friends feel about his unfortunate or fortunate selection? I can only imagine many of the people that have been part of his development and all those that have been beside him on his journey are extremely proud of him. At the end of the day I would think anyone selected in the NFL Draft no matter where that may be would be thrilled and I'd bet there's not a sports fan among us that would not trade places with him in a heart beat!!!!!

Chicago Cubs Fans

Chicago Cubs Fans

Few Sports Organizations and their fans have suffered more disappointment then Chicago Cubs Fans
Despite the limited success the team has had over the years their fan base has been extrodanarily supportive. As a sports fan we don't ask very much of our teams of choice, quite frankly we don't have much of a voice in the matter, but putting a competitive team on the field is the one thing we do expect. After all we are in large part one of the reasons teams are able to pay hundreds of millions of dollars for players, giving fans something to cheer about should not be asking too much...
Future Generation of Cubs Fan
Championships are the ultimate goal of any Professional Organization and the bragging right of the Players and fans, Chicago Cubs Fans have never known what it feels like to celebrate a Championship Season. Unfortunately they do have a great deal of experience enduring devastating disappointment. What A Fan has enormous admiration for Chicago Cubs Fans, it's the spirit of uncompromising loyalty that we find fascinating... It's almost as though winning among their fan base isn't everything but the love of the game is!!!
There are many Sports Organizations that have not had much success or winning seasons but still enjoy great fan loyalty but the Chicago Cubs Fans are truly a remarkable bunch. Whether they're cursed, have horrible luck or fans in the wrong spot and terrible judgement the unwavering support the Cubs fans show their team is what fanatic behavior is all about. Much can be learned by the amazing people of Chicago and Cubs fans around the World.

Chicago Cubs Fans, A Shinning Example of Loyalty!

The American Sports Fan expression of loyalty and support is something teams depend on, fans should be able to depend on our teams doing all they can to win! When do we question an Organizations loyalty to us? If winning is not in the cards but the stands are still filled has money trumped winning? For the Chicago Cubs Fans these questions do not matter to them, not because they don't care to the contrary they care deeply!

We invite you to follow What A Fan and visit our web site. Leave a comment tells us about yourself or give us a story idea, we'd love to hear from you!

New York Yankees Fans

New York Yankees Fans

Baseball season is in full swing and for New York Yankee fans that means another chase for a Championship, for the Yankee organization success is only measured by wins! Part of the allure and mystique of being a Yankees fan is knowing year to year your team will be competing in the Playoffs but that's not enough, it's Championship or bust for the Yankees and that's awesome for a fan base... Fans of the Yankees can be found all over the World they are one of baseballs most storied organizations, whether you like them or hate them they are well respected for their amazing history.
Yankee Faithful

New York Yankee fans enjoy a culture of winning. Their bragging rights are unparalleled and envied by sports fans in other major league sports. No one represents the Yankees organization with more class and competitive spirit then future Hall of Fame short stop Derek Jeter. Is unfortunate that the Bronx Bombers All-Star has not been able to take the field so far this season due to last seasons  injury that happened during the playoffs which he's still recovering from. Yankee fans are hoping to have their skipper back by the 4th of July.
Derek Jeter

New York Yankees fans have over the years been judge harshly often being call arrogant and obnoxious, this may be true but when your team has as many Championships as they do your bragging can be considered arrogant. I've heard many Yankee fans say, if you don't like it beat us and win more Championships! It may suck to hear but damn-it its true... There are tons of awesome MLB Baseball fans supporting great organizations but the fans that impress us most are fans that stand by their teams during lean loosing seasons. They show up, cheer with aggressive passion and love their players regardless of the performance of the team.

New York Yankees Fans Class Act?!?!

New York Yankees fans showed they are more then just an arrogant obnoxious bunch during the recent events that happened in Boston. It was the Yankees organization and the fans that stood together in solidarity and sang Neil Diamonds "Sweet Caroline" in Yankee Stadium to show support for those injured at the Boston Marathon... Class Act!

Sports Fans Unite

Sports Fans Unite

What are you a fan of the NFL, NBA, MLB, NHL, Nascar or College Athletics? Whatever the sport you follow is it possible to imagine watching a game without the atmosphere fans provide? I can't! Isn't it time sports fans unite on behalf of each other? I do. Professional sports organizations all have unity among their owners and players, their unions meet to strengthen their opportunities and carve out a larger piece of the sports pie.
Why Can't We Be Friends!

I believe if sports fans unite there would be an opportunity to share in the pie we've helped to bake. I believe there are numerous ways sports fans can reap the benefits of having a strong voice. We demonstrate our unity at stadiums and arenas across the Country but once we leave that environment we are so fragmented. Meanwhile organizations and players continue to fatten their pockets.

I would love to see more activities that bring sports fans together in a united cause whatever that might be, conventions, charitable projects or community sports fan festivals. There is no reason events like these can't be organized to help sports fans unite. It shouldn't matter what team you cheer for there is a common bond sports fans share, its our individual expression of passion. I can't be the only person that's had this thought or feels it would be amazing to socialize in an environment with thousands of like minded fans of every sport.
Devoted Sports Fans

Sports Fans Unite What's the Answer

If and when sports fans unite it will change the way the sports industry view sports fans! We won't just be load cheering, beer drinking, face painted, costume wearing fanatics... We'll be sports fans united and ready to sit at the table to share the desert we are largely responsible for having been baked...!!! Check out What A Fan and leave us your thoughts.

Sports Fan Award

Have you ever wondered why there has never been a sports fan award? Americans are the kings and queens of award shows, hell we have an award for everything! How is it that sports fans have been overlooked in this department? Well for whatever reason it hasn't happened yet I have to say I'm very pleased it hadn't been done yet!

When I created What A Fan fourteen years ago the What A Fan Awards was part of my long term plans, I'm proud to see those plans coming to life. A sports fan award is way over due... Cincinnati Reds Lucky Ted

Cincinnati Reds Lucky Ted

The Cincinnati Reds lucky Ted Kremer is a 30yr old bat boy with Down Syndrome that seems to be a lucky charm for the team. There are stories of amazing and heart warming relationships between player and fans and this is another great one! Today Ted was back on the field for the Reds taking care of his bat boy duties and putting smiles on the faces of everyone in the dugout.
www.yardbarker.com

Tonight as Todd Frazier received his bat from Ted, Ted asked him to hit a home run for him and as fate would have it Frazier gets a hold of one and takes it to straight away center for a home run. You couldn't write a better script if you tried! The look and excitement Cincinnati Reds Lucky Ted showed was priceless. The dugout went nuts and Ted jump into the arms of Todd Frazier like he was a member of the family, the Reds would say he is!

Cincinnati Reds Lucky Ted Loving Life

What a wonderful way for a sports fan with Down Syndrome to spend his time. Happy heals! There is no substitute for a smile on the face of a disabled young man with healthy spirit for life. What the Cincinnati Reds are doing for Ted Kremer will not be forgotten by Ted, his family and the fans. Cincinnati Reds Lucky Ted Kremer is a reminder of just how important sports is to us all and a fan is a fan no matter what physical challenge... We hope you'll support our web site where fans are celebrated. www.whatafan.com

Carmelo vs Durant

Carmelo vs Durant

This years NBA Scoring race came down to Carmelo vs Durant. The OKC Thunder super star had the opportunity to win the title with a 70pt personal best but decided to take the night off. So here's the question, should Durant had made the attempt to get the scoring title by playing in the last regular season game or is protecting his body from possible injury for the Playoffs the right thing to have done for his team?
dailythunder.com

As a fan I would have loved to see him at least give it a go and if he was off or not feeling it sit out the second half! There hasn't been a real competitive scoring fight since Thompson vs the Ice Man George Gervin, Gervin won that year by the way. Carmelo vs Durant could of been exciting. Melo came out of nowhere to challenge KD for the title this year but to have the last game to get it is like getting the ball last in a one point game for all the marbles...
NBA All Stars

Carmelo vs Durant Final Thoughts

NBA fans may be divided with their opinions of whether KD should have played or not but one things for sure Carmelo vs Durant will be thrilling us for many years to come. Visit our web site and join fans sharing their passion... www.whatafan.com

Remembering Pat Summerall

Remembering Pat Summerall

Pat Summerall has past away. Legendary broadcast and former NFL Kicker Pat was truly a mans man. His voice was pure velvet, he captivated all of us during his many broadcast non more then the sixteen (16) Super Bowls he called. Pat Summerall was a Florida boy played his college ball at Arkansas before heading to the NFL where he'd played for the Lions, Cardinals and finally the New York Giants.
espn.go.com

Pat's broadcast career was the stuff legends are made of, a Hall of Fame Inductee he's seen and done it all. His list of accomplishments are to long to mention, he's worked with or played against American Legends. He was an American treasure. If you're a sports fan you have no doubt listened to a Pat Summerall broadcast, the PGA Masters Tournament, the US Open Tennis Tournament, the NBA Finals, the NFL Super Bowl and countless others.

NHL in America

NHL in America

The NHL in America has struggled to gain a stable foothold among the other Professional Sports Leagues but the fan base that supports them are simply awesome. The fans are so supportive and have been through a lockout, a strike, bad management of teams and the game itself yet they continue to stand by the sport. It makes you wonder is the NHL doing all it can to keep their fan base  and grow the sport their fans love?

When you see post about hockey on social networks and blogs there seems to be a real separation among American and Canadian NHL fans. Americans don't see it as home grown and its not. You don't see a lot of kids in the streets playing hockey and that is part of the problem with the sport, but in Canada its everywhere!
heshootshescoores.com

So what can the NHL do about it? Is it a cultural issue? Will Americans ever embrace hockey? We believe they will! I'm a die-hard sports fan, I love action and competition and hockey is exciting! I believe that if you've never seen the sport in action or been to a game that's something you should do. After attending a hockey game and seeing the speed and skill of the players I had a new respect for the game and the people that play. NHL in America is definitely possible.
www.fromrussiawithglove.com

Another opportunity to increase hockey's popularity is getting the apparel on the backs of younger more hip kids. There was a period when hip hop artist were wearing hockey jersey's in video's and to award shows. Kids create trends and clothing could be the launching pad of acceptance. NHL in America needs a makeover, there fan base deserve it. Visit our web site and join fans of all sports sharing the passion! www.whatafan.com

Boston Marathon Explosion

Boston Marathon Explosion

Boston Marathon officials, participants and onlookers could not have imagined their race ending in tragedy but that's exactly what happened. A bomb ripped through the streets near the finish line of the marathon killing two and wounding twenty three, what was suppose to be a great race and tribute to the families of Newtown Connecticut became a war zone. This should be a reminder to all Americans just how vulnerable we all are and how quickly life can change.
www.boston.com

How safe are fans attending sporting events in America? Will the horrific events surrounding the Boston Marathon be a wake call for the sports industry or is this what we will come to expect as a realistic possibility when deciding to support our favorite sporting outing? Sports fans can tolerate just about anything but will they place themselves in harms way? I would guest no but there are to many examples of fans returning to the stands, stadiums and arenas despite a traumatic occurrence.
www.philly.com

Boston Marathon Explosion Final Thoughts

So what is the answer? How do we protect ourselves from sick twisted individuals that mean us harm and don't give a damn about anything or anyone? The world is changing and America's enemies are growing, unfortunately there will continue to be terrible events like the Boston Marathon Explosion, it will be up to us to watch over our fellow fans. We may not all cheer for the same teams but we are part of humanity and the actions of a few will not dim our spirits.

Jackie Robinson Day

Jackie Robinson Day

Today Major League Baseball celebrates the legendary accomplishments of Jackie Robinson. One of the most historic movements in American History selfishly initiated by a Baseball Owner and a Black Man that just wanted to play ball. Baseballs pioneer was not only an amazing and gifted ball player he was also an incredible humanitarian. His strength on and off the field changed lives, changed race relations among his peers and most importantly change the game of Baseball.
thegrio.com

In honor of this great man players on every team in the big leagues will wear Jackie Robinson's number 42. No player has had as big an impact on the game then Jackie, players of all race and nationality owe a debt of gratitude to him and his accomplishments. Athletes play for pride, love of the game, the opportunity to win and yes the money. Jackie Robinson played for his life and the lives of those who would follow behind him. Death threats were real, the hatred thrown at him would be unbearable today.
www.insidesocal.com

We not only celebrate what Jackie was able to do for baseball we celebrate the growth of a country once embarrassed by our actions. Looking back during that time we've come a long way, the game of baseball is better because of the actions of one man and an owner that just saw green! If you're a real fan of the game you know the story of Jackie Robinson and hopefully you've told his story to your kids. His story is not just a baseball story it's an American story and we should feel a responsibility to keep this amazing accomplishment alive...

PGA Fans a Class Act!

PGA Fans a Class Act!

Watching the Masters the last few days as a fan opened my eyes to just how different golf fans are from other sports fans yet how much all fans have in common. Golf is one of the few sports that provide their fan base the opportunity to be on the field along side the players. Golf fans for the most part are extremely respectful of the concentration required during a tournament and the self control fans display is admirable. Times, well, they are a changing. As today's Pro Golfer has become younger and stronger they have also become more social savvy. Twitter, Facebook and Youtube have become a way for Pro's to connect with their fan base and show off their personalities.
sports.gunaxin.com
Golf fans have also changed. Fans and players have always been very colorful in their attire but these days fans are taking that to a whole new level. As the Pro's have loosened up and become more expressive so have the fans that follow them. These days it's not uncommon to see a super fan or two dressed up in wild outfits getting as much attention for their costumes as the players they are out supporting...
bet.unibet.com
It seems as if golf fans have only been holding back their desire to express themselves because the legends of the past have tried to keep tradition intact but that all changed when Arnie's Army was born and the Golden Bear hit the lynx. Today a Tiger roams the lynx and golf fans across the globe are enjoying the freedom of expression! Visit our web site and join sports fans like you. www.whatafan.com

Sports Fans

Sports Fans

I've been a sports fan for as long as I can remember, I loved it all. Football, baseball, basketball, soccer you name it I played it. As a kid sports was my retreat form homework and chores, there was always a game to play in my neighborhood and I was pretty damn good at them all... I can remember trying out for the football team and going through all the drills, I loved it, even when I got my bell rung and saw stars I couldn't wait to get back on the field. I played every sport and made every team which kept me busy and out of trouble all year round. Looking back it was probably a real challenge for my mother who raised two kids own her own. I'll never forget the first time my mom took me to my first MLB Game, it was the New York Mets Old Timers Day and seeing that bright green luscious green grass was the must spectacular sight I had ever seen! I was hooked...

Today I can't play the games I still love but I can still watch and attend sporting evens all over the country. I've come to admire sports fans of all genres, their dedication is remarkable. Whether their teams are winning or loosing their passion and support is always there! Sports Fans are fantastic collectively but are also treated like stepchildren. Their the most important group and the least respected at the same time. Sports Fans are uniquely perfect and imperfect but the thought of a sports or entertainment activity without the attendance of screaming fans is unthinkable.
Next time you're at a sporting event and you're looking around the stadium or arena and you see all the wild crazy fans painted and dressed in the team colors don't call them crazy they're just an extension of you! Visit our web site and express your wild side. www.whatafan.com
